Cane Creek Cascades

Located near the Nature Center, the Cascades is
one of the most visited attractions at Fall Creek
Falls.  Cascading 45 feet down Cane Creek, the falls
are relaxing and beautiful.  The Cascades can be
accessed from the Nature Center by taking a short
trail.  The trail is basically just wooden steps leading
down the slope, followed by climbing down a few
rocks to get to the bottom of the Cascades.  Due to
its accessibility, the Cascades are a very popular
swimming hole.  Visitors can climb up on a portion
of the falls, and slide down some of the rocks.  We
really enjoy cooling off in these waters.  No
lifeguards are on duty, and slick, hidden rocks
abound, so exercise the utmost of caution when
swimming here.

Bickford Mill stood on this site for about 40 years,
serving the area by grinding corn into meal or feed.
A dam was built over the Cascades to deliver a
constant flow of water.  The mill used a turbine to
ground the corn.  During low water times, the dam
would serve to keep the mill going.  Farmers would
line up with corn in their wagons to be ground.  The
mill became a community gathering place.  In 1929, a
flood washed away the mill, carrying it over the
Cascades and Cane Creek waterfalls.

The Cascades can be viewed from the base of the
falls, and other overlooks just off the main trail.  A
swinging bridge spans the top of the Cascades,
offering nice views over the falls into the creek bed
below.
